(MHN Sports By Geum Yun-ho) The Olympic team led by Hwang Sun-hong has found out the teams it will face at the 2024 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers in September.
South Korea have been drawn with Myanmar안전놀이터, Kyrgyzstan and Qatar in Group B of the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers on Friday at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
A total of 43 teams will take part in the qualifiers, with four teams in each of the 10 groups from A to J, and three teams in Group K. The top 11 teams from each group will be drawn together. The top 11 teams from each group, the top four teams from the second-place finishers in each group, and the hosts, Qatar, will qualify for the Asian Cup. Qatar’s match against South Korea in Group B will be considered a friendly and the result will not affect the rankings.
The 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup will be held in Qatar from April 15 to May 13, 2024. The tournament will serve as the Asian qualifier for men’s soccer at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the top three teams qualifying for the Olympic Games. The fourth-placed team will play a playoff against the fourth-placed African qualifier.
Meanwhile, the Korea Football Association (KFA) announced on Friday that the Group B matches of the qualifiers will be held in South Korea. The venue and time will be announced at a later date. It will be the first time in six years that a qualifier for an AFC-organized competition has been held in South Korea, with the last qualifier for the AFC U-19 Championship taking place in Paju in 2017. It is the first time South Korea has hosted an U-23 Asian Cup qualifier.
